Children’s Day lunch bento

It’s Golden Week in Japan and they also celebrate Children’s Day today. How I wish I could visit Japan during Golden Week, we’ve been stuck at home the last two weeks busy with the kids’ revisions. They’ve had back to back papers this week, and next week is the second set of papers, so we will be doing more revision over this weekend! Sigh.

In Japan, they fly carp streamers for Children’s Day (also known as Kodomo no Hi). This day is to celebrate the child’s personality and happiness, and is designated as a national holiday in Japan. Each carp signifies the father, mother and child. The boys also wear little samurai hats.

In this Children’s Day lunch, I’ve made a carp out of omurice. I fried some rice and chicken chunks with ketchup, and wrapped it in an omelette. I’ve also made Brown from the mobile chat app LINE, and he is wearing a origami samurai hat and carrying some carp streamers.

The carp streamers were cut out from peppers, and I added sides of a shrimp and bean stir-fry, as well as some fried chicken.
