Tonight is the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, also called Yuan Xiao Jie (元宵节). My family traditionally eats glutinous dumplings during dinner, and I made these Sumikko Gurashi shiratama dumplings earlier today for the children. I served these with cold nata de coco, it’s the kids’ favourite and great on hot days.
I made a Sumikko Gurashi for my own lunch today, to match the shiratama dumplings for the kids. Stir fried pasta with a beef patty, hard boiled egg, grapes and strawberries. The pasta was topped with the Sumikko Gurashi characters that I made out of mashed potato. I rested them on carrot slices to make them balance on top of the pasta.
Thought I would share an earlier Sumikko Gurashi bento I made couple of days back, I didn’t like how it turned out and hence I had redone it as a pasta version (the photo above). This earlier version features the Sumikko Gurashi characters made of rice and shaped into small balls of onigiri.
This bento was served with teriyaki salmon, broccoli and fruits. Although it was yummy, I actually didn’t like the bento and had deleted the photo, lucky it was still in the deleted items folder on my laptop, LOL.
