September 13 is Roald Dahl’s birthday and in memory of that we are having a bento blog hop today. I loved reading Roald Dahl’s books as a child, and this year I spent a fair bit of time deciding which book I should base a bento on. Couldn’t make up my mind and finally ended up making two bentos.
Firstly I made a Matilda bento. I used an edible oblate sheet such as the one seen here and drew Matilda on top of a stack of books using a toothpick dipped in some diluted food colouring. This was how I remembered the illustrations in the book I read as a child and wanted to recreate it.
I also made a bento based on The Enormous Crocodile. The crocodile is made of green egg sheet with cheese and nori details. I sprinkled furikake at the bottom of the bento box to represent the ground. I also made some frightened children hiding in the grass, these were made from Japanese mashed potato and nori.
