Handpainted Little Twin Stars kaya bread buns

I came across the idea of hand-painting on bread when browsing this baking blog where she handpainted the bread buns before baking. I used my bread recipe here and used kaya (coconut jam) as filling.

After the bread dough has proofed for one round, punch down the dough and separate into 6-7 round discs. Roll out each disc on a well-floured surface and add a tablespoon of kaya to the middle, and seal up the seams properly. Mix a teaspoon of cocoa powder with egg yolk for painting the bread. (Note: The original recipe used dark cocoa powder but I didn’t have any on hand, so I made do with the Hershey’s cocoa powder I had).

I found that the egg yolk-cocoa powder mixture got rather thick after a while, so I added a few drops of water to get it back to the correct consistency. The drawings of Kiki and Lala are done freehand.

Bake the buns at 180 degree Celsius for about 10-12 minutes. I actually took the bread buns out of the oven at 10 minutes as I noticed they had already doubled in size and were starting to turn golden-brown.
