The Hungry Caterpillar

Today’s bento is based on The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Z1 and Z2 have read it many times and they love it.

Hungry Caterpillar lunch bento (onigiri)

The Hungry Caterpillar bento

The Hungry Caterpillar is made of rice mixed with spinach for his body, and rice mixed with ketchup for his head. I included the food the caterpillar ate during the week:

– Apple (represented by cherry tomatoes with cheese and sesame seeds center)

– Pear (I included a slice of China pear)

– Plum (represented by red grapes)

– Strawberries

– Orange (I made this using a cucumber wedge with cheese cut-outs)

I could have easily used real apples slices and orange wedges, just thought that this was a great way to have some food creativity, LOL.

There is also a butterfly food pick to represent the beautiful butterfly he eventually morphs into.
