Feb 12 this year is Fat Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. It refers to the practice of eating fatty, richer foods before the fasting of the Lenten season which begins on Ash Wednesday. As pancakes are traditionally consumed on this day, it is also known as Pancake Day in parts of the United States.
I didn’t get to make a proper lunch for the kids today as school is still closed and we were bringing them out near lunchtime. I made them little snack bentos to have before we left home, to tide them til we could get a proper lunch outside.
Their snacks are Mardi Gras themed, I cut a little mask peanut butter sandwich and decorated with purple sugar sprinkles for Z1, and a crown PB sandwich for Z2. I wanted to rim the edges of the crown sandwich with purple sugar sprinkles, and had spread a bit of PB along the edges to hold the sugar sprinkles but the effect didn’t turn out quite right. The snacks included some cheese cut in the shape of a crown, and grapes and strawberries.
We made pancakes for snacks in the afternoon. I didn’t have enough time to make the pancakes from scratch today so I cheated and used pancake mix. They turned out thinner than normal pancakes, more like crepes actually.
I served up a bunch of plain ones spread with Nutella and rolled up to make it easier for little hands to hold. I divided up the last bit of batter and coloured them green, purple and yellow (I don’t have gold food colouring LOL) to represent the traditional Mardi Gras colours. I cut them and presented it as a court jester hat, with two plain pancakes underneath.
The kids shared this, its served with some Indonesian tapioca cake and more grapes.
